Brazilian Blowout Controversy: What are we doing?

Many of our customers will have noticed the recent controversy circling around formaldehyde emissions from the Brazilian Blowout treatment. In Australia there has been a lot of negative press around the use of keratin treatments, of which the Brazilian Blowout treatment is one. In the salon, we’ve noticed our customer’s concern over the product and we have taken steps to address it!

Initially we were concerned for the health of our stylists who would be the most likely to face any adverse consequences as they use the products all day every day. In June 2010 we installed a medical grade ventilation system in the salon above the treatment area in order to prevent any possible emissions affecting the staff (and our clients!).

As of the beginning of 2011, we have been stocking the Brazilian Blowout Zero Formulation, which was created by the company in response to controversy over their products. Brazilian Blowout Zero is a new professional smoothing solution formulated with a breakthrough plant derived ‘kerasafe’ bonding system. Zero formaldehyde is released during, before or after the treatment.

The secret to this new formulation is glycolic acid, a fruit derived acid from sugarcane, similar to citric acid. Glycolic acid is usually used as a natural exfoliant and moisturizer, and has been extensively studied for its resurfacing, antioxidant and collagen/elastin stimulating properties.This offsets the hair straightening chemicals and maintains the health and strength of the hair. The Zero treatment has been cleared by the ADG code in Australia and the NOHSC in the United States as safe for use in salons.
